How to have a day job and still work on your dreams

Let’s be real, unless you are a trust fund kid or a 16 years old TikTok, dancing around for millions of people and getting loads of endorsements, you need a job. At least until your main plans take off the ground.

Unless you are wealthy, it’s a little hard to make it happen, and it’s ok.

If you inherited some money, or have money deposited in your account by a family member, so you can pursue your dreams, you are lucky. It’s easy to say “follow your dreams” when you are not exhausted after a full day of work. Real people have to have jobs and work on their dreams in the meantime.

There is no way I could simple abandoned my work, that pays for my house and utilities, to be broken again in my late 30’s in order to focus on my dream. I will have to do both. Is it working? Not yet, but at least with this job, I’m able to travel and get the content I need to put videos on my youtube channel. Getting the videos ready is a different stories. I’m getting better. At filming and editing, when I have time for it.

I’m super jealous of people that can juggle it all.

You can’t barely save the files and put it order. Sometimes you get paralyzed by fear of looking ridiculous in front of an audience, you don’t money for therapy yet, which you certainly probably need it with the internet trolls. Are you afraid of being ostracized by strangers? I’m 100% terrified of it.

How do you juggle your work life with your dream? I read in a book once that you should give one hours of your day for your projects. Its hard to get that when you give 9 hours away to a corporate job, because they have the tendency of draining your soul and your will to do anything else.

Anxiety cripples in.

We need planning. Planned content is the way to go. If you have an undiagnosed ADHD like me, and your brain works a million miles per hour, it might be hard to focus.Especially when you are at your day job, and you have ideas that you’d like to work on, instead of focusing on the job that pays you.

Your creativity is on the highest peak when you can’t do nothing with it.

People tell you to keep a little booklet with you at all times, to write ideas as they come to you. The muse plays me like a fiddle. Sometimes I’m talking to coworkers and I have a brilliant idea to write about something, and just like sand in my hands, it slowly vanishes away. Or When I sit at home, with a document open, just staring at a blank page.

I’ve seen people work on novels,  personal projects and make things work, while they have a 9 to 5 job. In my experience I’m still trying to make it happen. Do I lack confidence because I’m an immigrant or do I lack confidence because I don’t have any at all? There is something holding my feet and I would like to know what is it.  That’s why it’s hard to risk it all.

My day job gives me a sense of belonging.

The hotel I’m working is giving me the opportunity to stay in hotels from the same brand for a cheaper price. It’s a great discount on food outlets, spa services and parking. After 15 years working in hospitality, I finally think I made the right choice. They encourage you to travel and to take time off. The hotel also has a good care of your mental health, as they give you counseling and apps that you can use to take care of yourself.

Your Day job have a purpose in your life.

It can’t only be pay the bills. It has to be a step forward into your goals on a daily basis. You can’t also put a deadline in it. We all have different paces, and different timing, don’t overwork yourself, because when you get to where you want to be, exhaustion it’s the next exit.

Keep working and try to find small joy in simple things.

My job allows me to travel and stay in beautiful properties with a high discount. That also allows me to film my trips and post it on my upcoming youtube channel. What does your day job bring you, while you are working on something that you really want to? Some people like to make music, some people like to make art, and some like me loves writing. How can you take a moment of your day to feel accomplished with your art?

We just got out of a two year pandemic, where most of us had the chance to work from home. Most of us also had the time to focus on our craft. I never wrote so much as the time I was stuck at home.

You were not expected to improve during the pandemic, but some of us needed that time for ourselves.

Travel Vlogger

My blog had 50 something posts on 2020, which is a miracle, because I don’t have the time I need to create content, neither do I think that people actually read it.But I keep going, with my day job and my dream of being a writer. Which I’m already, I just don’t get paid for it. It’s my art.

My latest creation is this :

24 hours in Vail, Colorado!

Back in Vail for 24 hours! What to do for fun and where to eat for a cheaper price!

It was windy. A cold, strong breeze, with leaves flying in a spiral.  Last time in Vail for this witch was 13 years ago. Social media was still on its first steps, there was not immediate sharing, only enjoying. It was the first time in my life that I felt truly happy. Until the day the hotel I was doing my internship told us we, all the student visas holders, would have to leave by the end of the season, in April. With that being said, we will not be able to renew the visa for the summer season, like planned. It was a the ice bucket challenge. But not for good cause.

Like the Coldplay song Viva La Vida says:

“One minute I held the key. Next the walls were closed on me And discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand”.

Every time I hear this song, I’m immediately transported back to those days.

One minute I was hopping around town, filled with happiness, going to coffeeshops and bars, the next minute my castle crumbles and I’m packing my bags back to my parents house in Brazil, with a canceled visa. Only to be back 13 years later, married, with a decent job, that allows me to stay in nice hotels and with a document that allows me to stay forever, and not be shipped back home due to any financial crisis. Anyway! The mini trip was great!

Vail 13 years later! What changed? I changed!

We rent a car on Turo, which is similar app to Airbnb, but only for cars. They have all kinds of luxury cars that you can rent, but also cheaper options like the one we got. The reason why we had to rent a car, its because with the Colorado laws, you have to have a 4X4 car to go up the mountains.

Our ballerina CT Lexus would not be up to the game. It would literally flip around like its on a try out for a Broadway show. We would also face the possibility to get fined up to a thousand dollars, it was better and safer to spend about 100. We ended up getting a SUV type of Mercedes, quiet and steady. The trip was about to get real!

Vail is only 1 hour and 40 minutes away from Denver. It is a very beautiful scenery, as you get lost in the white snow covered Aspen trees. Every few miles you can spot a ski resort along the road. I did our check in online and a few minutes later they texted us telling our room was ready.

The Grand Hyatt Vail Resort is stunning! Our room faced the mountains and had a couch. Once again they had robes, or this time 1 robe. I had to share with Josh for the photos, as he embark in my madness and partake the in my adventures. The hotel is big with 3 restaurants, a spa, plenty of outside area. For our surprise the hot-tub and the pool were open. We didn’t have bathing suits. I think it was the voice of reason saving us from a pneumonia. I will be back when its warmer.

Food!

There is a way to eat cheaper while in Vail and I can prove it. As I was a local many years ago, I kept myself away from those fancy restaurants, that wants to charge you a huge amount of money for the name of the chef. I’m still a local in my heart and looked for places I used to eat when I lived there. One of them is called Route 6.

Route 6 is a dinner in Eagle Vail, nothing extraordinary, but good for a reasonable breakfast meal. I got a breakfast sandwich and Josh got a steak. He didn’t like it, but also, who order steak in a side road dinner? Well, Josh does. I always set lower expectations, and at Route 6 I knew what to expect.  Meal number 1.

In the afternoon, while walking around the Vail Village, Josh got hungry again and I decided to join him. We stop at the bottom of the mountain restaurant, to have some beers and tacos. Well, I had the beer. I asked about the people coming down the slopes, only to find out that the mountain was closed due to a power outage, around 12pm. The time the witch arrived in town. Surprised yet?

At night, after walking around town and trying to take a nap, we decided to eat again. Now it was time for dinner. I didn’t want to go out again, so we ate at the hotel bar, we shared half chicken with gnocchi and wine. Plus dessert.  The hotel restaurant only open the dining room Fridays to Sundays and I though this was a great idea. They should do that at my work place.

Fun!

Around Vail you have some sub-divisions like Eagle-Vail, Avon, Edwards, Minturn and Gypsum. People usually live on Eagle-Vail, Avon and Edwards and work in Vail. Very rich people lives in Vail. The working peasants hide in smaller, more affordable places.

In the morning after breakfast at Route 6, we drove over to the apartment complex I used to live. I didn’t realize how much I had to walk to take the bus, in the cold and snow, everyday. It is a long way!

It was great to revisit and I bet the prices now are way higher than 1200 a month with utilities. The complex had a painting job and I saw some people that looked like J1 visa holders living there, like I was once. The pain of carrying your laundry basket in the cold is real.

From that memory lane, we moved to another. We stopped at Avon, to walk around and see the little town center. In my mind the supermarket was in a different direction and this time I didn’t want to cross the train tracks to go to Starbucks, like I used to. The witch is old and tired.

I wanted to go to Beaver Creek, but the wind was too strong to get the gondola up, and get the bus that take us there. Walking around was painful, as a dust particule hit josh’s eyes and he immediately freaked out. Let’s go buy sunglasses then.

Later on we took the hotel shuttle to walk around the Vail Village. Most of the bars I used to hang out are still there, including the one where me and my friend had a blast time and Jesus was the for the resident DJ for the party. Vendetta’s was the place and Joana was the queen (as I like to portrait myself in my mind)

I took more photos, tested my new phone lenses, at least tried,  my hands were cold because I forgot my gloves. The streets were empty, only a few people walking around, as the season was coming to an end.

After Dinner, we went to bed at 9pm, after all, it was my day off and I wanted to sleep on the nice bed as much as I could. Early morning the next day, I took some time to take some photos with the hotel robe, which I believe is going to become a thing, because you just look fancy in it.

We check-out at the hotel and once again, stopped at Vail Village to pick up a coffee and muffin  at Loaded Joe’s for the trip back, but we only had 10 minutes, because we didn’t want to pay for parking. Couldn’t even tell the barista about the time I lived in town, as I told everyone else I encountered.

It was a great short trip! I can’t wait to be back, with more time and a bathing suit packed next time! Now let me go edit the videos to post on youtube, as the channel is coming together! I have way more to show on videos!

Stay Healthy, Stay Sane!

What would you do if you win the Lottery?

“I’m Mrs Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous. You wanna piece of me?”

Spears, Britney –

Fun Post Saturday! What would do if you win the Lottery?

I’m utterly obsessed with rich celebrities and their lavish lifestyle. I’m not ashamed to say that out loud. Reality shows that show the life I can have, give me a chance to escape my reality for at least a few minutes and I’m ok with that.

Sometimes I just put it on mute and watch the images of flying private jets, skiing in Aspen, and partying on yachts. In the early days, I used to watch MTV Cribs and Girls of Playboy Mansion. The very early stages of reality tv consumed most of my free time.

American Tv shows allured me into a lifestyle that doesn’t exist for regular Joe.

Watching this from abroad gives you an idea that America is all about that lifestyle. If you were a teenager in the early 2000s like I was, and you lived somewhere else other than the United States, you probably got some of this reminiscent in you.

All this alluring off the rich and famous for me to get here and nothing of that being real. Well, it’s real for the Trust Fund kids and society heiress, but not for the average American. The one who lives in the middle of nowhere and has to drive 1 hour and back to work every day to make a minimum wage of 7.25 hourly. And pay 100 dollars weekly for gas. Damn Indiana.

Something that always lived rent-free in my mind is the idea of what would happen to me if I get rich overnight. Like if my mom turned to me and say “We’ve always been rich, but I wanted you to build some character and appreciation for life.”

Would you be happy or mad? I would be mad. So mad. So I could be living like Paris Hilton this entire time and you took it away from me? How dare you? Well, at least I would be able to afford therapy. Since that wouldn’t happen the next possibility would be me winning the Lottery.

If I woke up and have the magical numbers here is what would I do:

Not quitting my job at first.

I would first invest in something. I would buy some franchises and some stocks, like big ones, so the money could keep rolling. I would love to buy some shares of a huge company and become an investor. Be part of their board of advisory. Netflix perhaps or Amazon Prime video. Heck, I would create my own film studio.

The first film studio was created by a Latina, just like Tyler Perry did for people of color. Buy a huge piece of land and build up. Give opportunities to new faces. Give them a chance to do what they love instead of competing in Hollywood with the same 3 faces we have in every movie.

Quitting my job.

Photo by Dirk Spijkers on Unsplash  Argentina Glaciers

I would quit my job and take my husband and travel around. Covid authorities permitting. I would travel around Europe first, eating the best food and drinking the best wine.

I want to swim in Greece crystal waters and eat fresh fish. Check the Aurora Borealis in the North poll and see different places. Definitely go to Tierra del Sol in Patagonia to see what’s considered the end of the earth.

Take my parents on a luxury trip.

My parents travel but it’s somehow always chaotic. It’s either one or another traveling, never both of them, because it gets too expensive. I would send them first-class on a trip to Portugal. First-class, the best suite, and all the food they could get. Sightseeing and all the fun without worries.

Buy my Husband the Truck he wants.

Josh is always talking about the truck 80k, 60k, the Tesla Truck. The only way to buy it would be by winning the lottery. Also, pay all his student loans and they are a lot. Chiropractic school is damn expensive.

I would buy myself a small villa in Italy.

If you know somebody that is selling a winery and a few houses in Italy, send them my way. I’m crazy about Italian wines and I would love to relocate to a charming village where I could make wine and have some quirky Italian neighbors Much like that movie “Under the Tuscan Sun”.

We would party in Ibiza

Photo by Michael Discenza on Unsplash

And we would say Ibiza with a lisp to sound fancier. We would sunbaked all day and party all night, in consideration of the time we were too tired and poor to go to a decent influential party.

Closing a couture store so I could shop without disturbance.

Instead of sales associates looking at me like I don’t belong, like “Pretty Woman”, and me when I walked into Louis Vitton in Denver. Instead, I would be served the best bubbly and get stuff without looking at the price tag. Oh, you just spent 16k on pieces? Good for you! here is another purse that cost another small fortune as a gift.

Help a nonprofit organization in my country.

Every time I watch the news from Brazil, my heart dies a little. No one should go hungry for no reason. I would help/ invest in a food bank, so some less-income people would have food in their fridges.

I would also include basic hygiene items on the box because that also costs a lot of money. In the meantime, I could create a subscription program to help the less fortunate, because this is not a 1-time thing. We could create a box every month for 30 dollars and that would ship the items to a family in need. Make the wheel keep turning.

Invest in a restaurant.

Photo by Nick Karvounis on Unsplash

Becoming friends with a celebrity chef and out of nowhere, just because I have all the money, I would call myself a Restauranter. Because I invested all the money and I mean real money, the restaurant and its profit are 50% mine and I would pose like I own everything.

The restaurant, the chef, and the workers. I’ve seen it happen a few times in my restaurant career and that’s one of my goals. Dress for the job you want. I would dress up like I own everybody.

Last, but not least, I would buy my in-law’s house in Indiana.

They could do whatever they want with the money they got. I would get my parents a penthouse close to where they live.

Again it’s fun to think of how different life could be if we were in a more financially stable situation if we didn’t need to worry about rent, school debt, and mortgage.

I would live a lavish life.

Don’t let the mind coaches take away the fun of playing pretend and daydreaming of an unreachable lifestyle. Life is meant to be fun, and not just follow the rules those random people decided to call out as the right way to live.

What would be your lifestyle dream if money was illimited? What would you do if you suddenly win the lottery? Let me know in the comments!

See you next week!

The New Roaring 20’s are coming!

When the new roaring ’20s finally starts!

After a week of feeling low, I’m back ! And since this blog is about empowerment and positivity, today I’m writing about The Roaring ’20s. As soon as the vaccine is in, I will start getting ready to be out. It’s easy to understand now why people from the roaring ’20s were always overdressed. I can’t wait to paint my face with make-up and do my hair to hang out at Target.

The 2020 decade we are still in the running to be able to enjoy. After endless hours of laughing at memes, watching reels of people I have no idea what intentions are, and the news saying we are all doomed, I want to start my roaring 20’s. The time I was morphing into my couch is over. I’m ready to shine.

Ready to shine into the new decade

This pandemic stuck us all in the house, living in a dystopian future, waiting for a vaccine and cure for some new virus we had no idea what was causing or how could we cure, except be away from each other. That for me it’s the worst part. Not being able to laugh with my friends in person, meet up for lunch, spending the holidays alone was borderline neurotic. Human are made to have contact with others. We needs hugs, smiles and electronic devices are not made for that.

Day after day, I lived in hope of being able to regain some control over my life, the hope of being able to walk around free. I don’t know about you, but I’m staying at home for almost a year now. At this point, I’m feral and I need to be introduced to the wild again. The other day when I went to the grocery store someone walked in my direction, and I flinch. Like the stranger was going to ask me something. That leads me to the question: are you ready to go outside and start to live your life again?

The 1920’s

After the 1918 Spanish Flu, which has a lot of similarity to the Corona Virus, also trapped people at home for almost two years, “The Roaring 20’s” got this name because of the new possibilities at the beginning of the decade and the new possibilities shining upon people.

The 1920s was a decade of a lot of progress, the 19th amendment finally passed in the State of Tennessee in August of 1920, women finally gain their rights to vote, the women were also gaining space on the job market and living a liberation unknown for them so far. It was a decade of industrial progress, people moving to big cities and suburban families being considered upper class.

It was also the decade that brought us Jazz and the Flappers. Ladies who were in short dresses and short shorts, dancing around and being free. Would we ever be able to be free like they once were? I hope so.

The Great Depression of 1929

Due to the crash market in 1929, the country went into a big recession. According to historians, because of the mass-produce of goods, consumer debts, and the stock market. It’s weird to think that now, we are living through the same difficulties because of bad virus management. You can tell me whatever, I still the virus was managed poorly due to 45th president. If the president told us, when he first got the briefing, instead of using us and our health, as a political weapon, we would have been better. Now he is finally out, we are starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel. It is about time. There was also the alcohol prohibition, I believe thats the era where the speakeasies had a huge boom. Drinking underground was the way to go.

What is going to be new in the New Roaring ’20s?

I think people will still be cautious for quite some time. The maniac hand washing. The inside sneeze when you are in the middle of the store. The explanatory after coughing “I’m not sick” eyes. After we get vaccinated, the media stop focusing so much on the death rate, and start focusing on the curve flattening ( did that ever happened at any point?). We will regain some confidence to go outside, and that my friends will be the moment we are all waiting for.

Once people realize that life is getting back on track, we will be able to go out with friends, barbecue with family, go to birthday parties (no blowing candles, that over forever). I wonder if single people will be able to date strangers from an app without asking for a negative covid test before agreeing to meet? Here is my million-dollar idea: The app may have to create a QR code, like a restaurant menu.

Are you gonna be able to sit next to a stranger?

Maybe we will drink from a stranger cup like they did before? If your best friend never offered you to try some of her drink at a festival, she is not your best friend. Life Pre-Covid was hell unsanitary. Licking your fingers to open a plastic bag at the grocery store? Never again.

Are we gonna be able to sit next to other people in theaters? How long it will take for us to feel comfortable sitting next to a stranger? Is the Waffle House big depression going to happen? Cause the restaurant is known specifically for their unsanitary behavior and there is no other place to go at 3 AM when you crawling back home from a bar.

I miss seating in a restaurant, with live music playing, or some karaoke bar, where people are convinced they are on The Voice. I need to showcase my talent to people other than my husband.

A few things I plan to do when the restriction are lifted :

Travel abroad. I’ve been stuck at home this entire time thinking about traveling to Greece. I follow an account of a photographer and the country is gorgeous. The scenery is idyllic and the water is crystal blue. I’m not going to even start it with the food.

Go back to school and get a certificate in Writing and Producing. I will probably have most of the classes taken, but I’m interested in learning about the Film Industry as a business and not only as an employee. I want to be able to produce my own content and for that, I need to learn. And no, I want to actually go to school and network. I took Creative Writing online and it led me nowhere, because of poor networking.

Go to a Carnival and eat all the food at the food stands. Hotdogs, Cotton Candy, popcorn, and just people watch.

Go to a concert. Or a show. Or just watch someone play the guitar so we could all sing along while drinking.

It’s about appreciating the little things!

It’s about appreciating the little things. The New Roaring 20’s has everything to be the best decade of our lives yet if we only allow it to be. If we are not so scared to live it up, after the hardship that was the beginning of the new decade.

The vaccine is here, soon it will be for everybody, and we will be finally free, but only if we want to be free. Some people might take longer to adjust, some might be too scared to go out again. Everyone should do as they please, but in my case, I’m going to enjoy it. I’m going to go outside and make some memories. Other than stay at home and watch other people having fun.

The time is up! What is your plan when you are finally able to go outside without restriction? Sing at karaoke, eat at a Buffet in Las Vegas, go to a concert? Let me know in the comments because I need ideas too!

Stay healty! Stay Sane! We almost crossing the line!

All the roads leading back to Colorado

It’s been a hard couple of days and I can believe we are moving again!

It’s been a hard couple of days, as I try to box the entire house to move again. Hard to concentrate, hard to get things done, always being distracted by the new possibilities I might find in my new home. Every time I seat at my table to write, I look at the blank page for a couple of minutes, until I get up again, and start to pack another room of the house.

I’m dusting off my snow boots!

All this move has affected my creativity in every possible way. I cannot just turn off my problems and sit down to write. Not this time. We are moving to Colorado, after spending a year trying to make it in Austin, Texas. I can’t believe I’m dusting off my boots after only a year!

Austin is a very nice place if you fit in one of the boxes: you either work for a tech company, you live up the north side of town, or you are part of the young bubble that can afford to pay 1800 in a studio apartment. California prices in Austin are beyond the reality of normal who wants to make a living here.

My jobs are always related to the hospitality industry, I have over fourteen years of working with it, always being in front of the house, yet, I couldn’t get a job in Austin. I see it as either a sign for me to keep improving and getting better in a different area of Austin doesn’t like outsiders, who are not from Texas. I lived in the South before, and I faced the same difficulties I have been facing here.

I don’t know what to expect this time

I don’t know what to expect from Denver, because I’m trying to keep my peaceful state of mind to not freak out. When I lived in Eagle-Vail, in the 2009 winter season, I went to Denver for short trips, I never actually lived there. In 2009, I worked at The Ritz Carlton- Bachelor Gulch, in Avon, but the hotel decided to close for maintenance after the winter season. Most likely because of the Financial crisis.

I couldn’t get a transfer replacement and my visa was canceled by the company, as they sent all the international employees back home. It was one of the biggest disappointments of my life. When the opportunity to relocate appears the first thought in my mind was “You won’t ship me back home, bitch! Not this time!”

Young Joana in 2009 at Vail ski slopes

Colorado is a beautiful state and two of my best friends live there, the other Sanderson Sisters. I can’t wait to be close to them. I don’t ski, but I do enjoy watching people coming down the slopes, while I eat at the restaurant.

Moving again is nerve racking and that’s why it has been so hard to concentrate. When you work in a hotel, you just shut down any feelings, put your clown make up one, and pretend your problems don’t exist. It’s hard to do that when you are working from home.

Managing distractions

With the distractions I have to manage, my inability to sit still, and the phone, it usually gets me staring at the wall, in disbelief of my purposes in life. I’m not sure if it’s the Covid Era we are living through, my move, or I’m tired of everything and just need a break. A real break. But with that, it also comes with the stupid idea of taking a break from something you are working on, which means you are being inconsistent and unreliable. I have been reading a lot on what makes a blog a better blog and this is another point of exhaustion.Pinterest is driving me nuts.

Just like Instagram for the normal people and Linkedin for the Ceo, Pinterest comes in a category of distraction and a world of possibilities of what could wrong trying. Whatever you click on, you get more and more of the same. Just like every other social media, it’s set up to control you and drive you crazy. Posts like “10 reasons why your blog is not working” or “ Start making 30K a month in 6 months blogging”.

Here is what they don’t tell you:

1: You have to have a strong niche, like a fit blog, mommy blog, cooking blog

2: You have to post consistently, like many posts a month, build a following with a mailing list, live, and breathe the blog.

3: It’s not instant. It might take time and commitment.

Honestly, I’m almost sure that people with successful blogs are the ones writing it. They make the blog a company and start hiring people for different areas. It’s a team job. You have to have a business plan, a social media crew, and all those things cost money, and not all of us have investors. Some of us start from the bottom.

Writing the posts myself, it gets hard to concentrate when hard times hit. I ran out of my CBD oil at the worst possible time, so I’m relying on my homeopathic Brazilian medicine. The message my friends, it’s giving yourself time to just wander. Life is not a competition and mental health is more important than ever, as I repeat myself.

Go ahead and teach yourself some new tricks

Learn about blogging its important to keep me motivated, another reason why I’m not too inclined to write posts these days. I’m improving my other pages on the blog to boost the SEO traffic, learning how to market on social media. I’ve watch plenty of youtube videos about rich kids who made a blog about decoration at their first apartment. In reality, I guess that was where the exhaustion part comes from. When all I learned starts working, I will write about it.

Let me know in the comments what are you working on to improve your blogging skills and if you have ever been to Colorado!
